The development of Striae has been likened to wound healing or scar formation.
About Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are a type of thin, flattened scar. Although the cause for the development of stretch marks is not fully understood, it is thought to be due to changes in the skin induced by hormonal changes. Then, mechanical stretching of the skin which is associated with rapid growth or weight change will cause the skin to rupture. The results are stretch marks.4
The different types of stretch marks
Striae Distensae is the generic term for stretch marks, but there are several different classifications:
Striae Gravidarum
are stretch marks that occur due to pregnancy.
Striae Rubrae
are early red stretch marks.
Striae Albae
are mature, white and depressed stretch marks.
